Ceramide plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration and preserving the integrity of the skin barrier. So, incorporating sufficient amounts of ceramide in cosmetics is a key objective for the industry. However, the hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding characteristics of ceramide lead to crystallization in aqueous solution, limiting its concentration. In the past, lyotropic liquid crystals were used to contain ceramide, but the carriers are unstable in aqueous solution because of their hydrophilic nature. This paper introduces an enhanced approach in design of ceramide carrier by using thermotropic liquid crystals (TLCs) with hydrophobic characteristics. The results demonstrate that the hydrophobic (TLC) - hydrophilic (aqueous solution) interface significantly enhances ceramide concentration by facilitating its self-assembly at the interface.
